CRDFS "Adopt A Park" Event
Under clear skies and fair weather a group of 18 Campbell River Dog Fanciers set about cleaning up Dick Murphy Park. The park seemed to be plagued by complaints of dog owners not taking responsibility for scooping up after their dogs. So with scoopers in hand the Fanciers went about scooping and cleaning up the park. Several bags of garbage, feces and broken bottles were picked up making the area cleaner and safer for families wanting to enjoy this wonderful park.
Dog owners are reminded that the park is for everyone and it's their responsibility to scoop their dogs feces and that the local by-laws require that dogs remain on leash at all times. So have fun but be responsible and considerate of others.

CKC Obedience and Rally Match

On June 16th, at Robert Osler Park, CRDFS hosted a CKC Obedience and Rally match. We had 26 entries, with competitors from Courtenay and Campbell River. Despite the wind, and many distractions, handlers and dogs did a very good job. If you are interested in learning more about obedience and rally, contact the club.

The Campbell River Dog Fanciers Society was pleased to present the Campbell River Search & Rescue with a $250.00 cheque to go towards a portable defibulator & training for their members.

"Dog Fanciers Fetch Support For Many Charities"
Anyone who has lost their faithful companion to cancer knows the heartbreak and need for more research into this devastating disease. At their October meeting the Campbell River Dog Fanciers Society voted to donate $2000.00 towards research into Canine Cancers. The donation is to be split equally between The Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust and The Western College of Veterinary Medicine Companion Animal Health Fund. The Pet Trust will establish an institute for cancer investigation and clinical care. The institute will be the first of its kind in Canada. The Companion Animal Health Fund grants funding into pet health studies resulting in development of better diagnostic tests and treatment of many diseases. This donation to the CAHF is in addition to donations made throughout the year in memory of member’s pets.
Included in this year’s recipients was the Knights of Columbus Christmas Hamper Fund which received $250.00. The Fanciers have been a proud Hamper Fund supporter for many years.
The Campbell River Dog Fanciers are also a proud supporter of The Pacific Assistance Dogs Society. Based in Burnaby BC PADS raises and trains assistance dogs for people with a physical disability or who are deaf or hard of hearing. In addition to $200.00 donated in April 2007 another $1000.00 was donated. The membership was thrilled to learn that the donation will be dedicated to sponsoring a PADS puppy through the first year of training. In 2005 and 2006 the Fanciers sponsored a PADS dog named Banjo through his first year of training and during his second year for his health clearances. Banjo is now part of the PADS breeding program which allows them to breed their own dogs to raise and train as assistance dogs.
At their December meeting a donation of $200.00 was made to Campbell River SPCA in memory of past CRDFS member Ian Pate. A donation was made to the Canadian Cancer Society for $200.00 in memory of past CRDFS member Byron Brown.
The Fanciers members want everyone to know that they are an active productive part of Campbell River. They have been around since 1977 promoting responsible dog ownership. Past donations have included many of the Teddy Bag Dispensers you see around town, the Campbell River SPCA, our local hospital as well as improvements which were made to Nunns Creek Park. CRDFS offer obedience classes taught by a dedicated knowledgeable group of trainers who attend seminars and have a vast knowledge of canine behavior and training techniques. For information on classes visit the website or call Heather at 287-9466.
The Dog Fanciers offer a library of dog training books, videos and DVD’s available to the public. The library is located at the Campbell River Veterinary Hospital in the grooming department, a refundable deposit is required. There are a good number of books which are missing or haven’t been returned. Please check your shelves and if you have any of them the Fanciers would appreciate their return.
Also worth noting is that you do not need to have a purebred dog to join. There are many dog sports for you to have fun with your dog.
